Autumn On Melancholy Hill

29Sep

I've been away from the blog for far too long. For a while, I was feeling very uninspired creatively and had nothing to say because I also had nothing new to do. Then it hit me, and I suddenly had a re-ignited interest in painting that was quite intense.

For the past 10 days, I've been working on the digital painting pictured above. Autumn has arrived, and with its melancholy mood and looming chill came new inspiration.

This piece features a number of elements that invoke the emotions that Autumn brings me. While most people find dreary, gloomy weather to be bleak and depressing, I find it rather inspiring. Autumn is the perfect mix of mild weather, beautiful color, and a sense of quiet melancholy.

In this painting you will see a girl (is she dead? undead? just made-up to look skeletal?) juggling sugar skulls near a weathered Japanese maple and an anonymous grave. The gravestone simply reads "eternal melancholy" in old Latin. Fog creeps across the grass as shadowy vines crawl up the girl's black dress and ravens fly overhead.

This is Autumn; my Autumn, my favorite time of year.

"Autumn On Melancholy Hill" is 36x48 inches printed on museum-quality canvas, and is available for purchase as a limited edition of only 10. There are only 4 prints left at $2,000 each, so contact me quickly if you are interested in purchasing!
