Design: You Get What You Pay For

21Jan

As with almost any other product, when it comes to design you get what you pay for. I recently experienced a great example of the tragedy that can result from cheaping out on design.

A client of mine, Equip 2 Conceal, is partnering with an upcoming S.E. Wisconsin Hunting & Fishing Expo, where they will provide gun safety training classes. The expo will be putting out a small postcard flyer to advertise, and one side of the flyer will be dedicated to advertising the class taught by Equip 2 Conceal.

Equip 2 Conceal came to me to design their side of the postcard, and informed me that the expo wanted to save money by having their own designer take care of their side of the card. Here is the final design for the expo's flyer design:

Unprofessional and bad flyer design

Looks like it was thrown together real quick by a small child, right? Now here is what I designed for the Equip 2 Conceal side of the flyer:

Professional flyer design

Can you see the difference in quality? The expo might have saved money in the short term by using an unprofessional designer, but people notice quality on a subconscious level and make instant judgments about businesses. Appearing sloppy and unprofessional is a huge turn-off to potential customers.
